Description: This is the part of a series of short videos illustrating various aspects of Australian Rules Football. A smother is when a player throws themselves in the path of the ball as it is being kicked by an opponent. It is a defensive manouvre to either prevent an opponent moving the ball closer to goal or reducing a goal (6 points) to a behind (1 point) if a shot on goal is taking place. A ball touched by any player prior to passing through the goalposts reduces the scoring to a behind. In this video we see Carlton's Bret Thornton in his 100th game smother the ball as it is being kicked by a Bulldogs player.
